Jan 31, 2017 · Tuning of ZFS module. The more difficult part of ZOL is the fact that there are plenty of tune able kernel module parameters, and hence ZFS can be used in many kinds of systems for many different reasons. (laptops, file-servers, database-servers, file-clusters) However some of the parameters come bad out of the box for file serving systems. Too little RAM kills the performance and was the cause of numerous unmountable pools in the past. The FreeNAS project states 8GiB of RAM as a minimum. Furthermore, since your concern is data loss, you will want to use ECC RAM. Since your box can only support 2GiB of RAM I assume it's a really old box which would not be a good choice for ZFS. 4U 24 Bay Storage Server FreeNAS Media CCTV ZFS X9DRI-F 2x E5-2670 V2 128GB RAM. $999.00. It is quite normal on a good ZFS server that most (>80%) reads are delivered from RAM Cache 100 times faster than from disk. This is why ZFS uses nearly all RAM dynamically on heavy use and even 128GB+ of RAM can make sense. Some people think this is bad, but this is perfect. The maximum space ARC will occupy can be changed but typically it uses up to 7/8 of your RAM, however will release memory back to system as other applications require it. So if you had 128GB of RAM in your system and your total dataset size was 1TB, 11.2% of all your data will reside in the ARC resulting in significantly faster access times. Mar 17, 2018 · I’m looking at building an “SSD NAS” for a small 10GbE network. It will be used for photo and video projects, so really just need snappy sequential read/write. Normally, I’d go with FreeNAS for something like this, but I’ve never tackled an all SSD ZFS situation before. I found this thread on the FreeNAS forum saying that there are a lot of caveats, and it’s generally a bad idea ...

ZFS itself really only needs 1GB (according to the FreeBSD manual and Solaris manual), but it really really needs that 1GB to run stable and if you have less than 8GB, then there is no guarantee that ZFS will get its 1GB because FreeNAS might be hogging a lot of it at any given time.

A ZFS server with enough RAM delivers most random reads from RAM. For sequential reads you can add an L2ARC for read ahead. This is why you want at least 4-8GB RAM for a ZFS server with some workloads are happy with 128GB RAM or more.
